The Islamic resistance movement, Hamas, has "highly appreciated the daring position" of the New Zealand Government for its stand against Israel over the spy passport scandal.

Prime Minister Helen Clark last week rebuked Israel over its refusal to apologise or explain the actions of two suspected spies jailed for trying to obtain a false passport.

The Hamas movement's spokesman, in a statement distributed today, urged all countries to follow the model of the New Zealand stand in adopting firm measures against Israel's violations of laws on foreign lands to achieve certain targets.

He said it was not the first time for "Zionist security apparatuses especially the Mossad to trek illegitimate means to achieve criminal acts".

"Numerous Mossad agents were captured in other countries while trying to obtain forged passports," he said, recalling that the two people that tried to assassinate Khaled Mishaal, Hamas political bureau chief, in Amman in 1997 were carrying Canadian passports.

The spokesman said that such methods revealed that Israel was facing problems in its work forcing it to pursue indirect means to infiltrate into the Arab and Islamic arenas to carry out "criminal operations". A spokesman for Helen Clark said yesterday that the Government had not had any official contact with Israel and was still waiting for an apology.
