Pride’s big New Year’s Eve extravaganza finally aired on American
pay-per-view yesterday. Deemed Shockwave 2 in the U.S., the six-hour
Japanese broadcast was paired down to three hours to fit U.S.
pay-per-view standards.
Due to the editing, the show seemed a bit choppy from a production
standpoint. But that did hardly anything to take away from the fact
that Pride put together an outstanding card. Despite a few decisions,
there was plenty of excitement from beginning to end… and a few
surprises too!
In the main event, Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira met
in the ring for the third time. With both Fedor’s Pride Heavyweight
Title and the Pride Heavyweight Grand Prix Title on the line, Fedor
looked as dominating as he ever has since making his way to Pride.
In the first round, Nogueira looked to be using his strikes to try and
setup a takedown of Fedor, but it only seemed to backfire. Fedor, as
was the case throughout the fight, was quicker to the punch than
Nogueira and seemed to take him down at will. When Nogueira did land
with his punches, they seemed to have little or no effect on Fedor.
Fedor was just flat out quicker, stronger, and more focused than
Nogueira all night. In the end, Fedor held onto his title and captured
the Grand Prix title with a unanimous decision.

In a strange twist of events, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Kevin
Randleman have completed their strange trip through the MMA twilight
zone. Randleman, the grappler, knocked out Cro Cop, the striker,
earlier in the year. This time the striker submitted the grappler when
Cro Cop applied a guillotine choke as Randleman repeatedly shot in,
leaving his neck exposed. Cro Cop gets the victory at just 41 seconds
of the first round.
