LONDON, England (CNN) -- A devil-worshipping sailor in the Royal Navy has become the first registered Satanist in the British Armed Forces.

Chris Cranmer, 24, a technician serving on the Type 22 frigate Cumberland, has been officially recognized as a Satanist by the ship's captain.

That allows him to perform satanic rituals aboard and permits him to have a non-Christian Church of Satan funeral should he be killed in action.

A spokesman for Britain's Ministry of Defence told CNN Sunday that it had a duty to allow members of the forces to practice their religion.

He added that the MoD was an "equal opportunities employer" which did not stop anyone having their own religious values.

Britain officially has over 300 000 'jedi knights' too, I wonder when their religion will be recognized in their military.

Satanists are less likely to throw grenades at their fellows then muslims.

Most of the "jedi" philosphy as stated by Obi-Wan and Yoda is kind of a rip off of Zen.

he'll conjure a demon on your ass.

on the satanism: its actually a fairly intriguing religion, I dare say 75% of people are satanists whether they admit it or not. I read the satanic bible a few years ago as recommended per a nihilistic russian friend in philly.

People in the WN/NS community often rebuke it as selfish or jewish lies due to La Vey being jewish originially, but if you actually read the book, it says to do whatever you feel is best for yourself and survival of those you love, thus WN/NS fits into this perfectly. I've yet to see a solid rebuttal of satanism's theories, other than "wow a good idea but why would you use a word like satan that turns so many people off".

The problem with satanism is only someone somewhat disturbed would go with a religion associated with evil...

Contrary to what the article indicates, Satanism (at least the more common, so-called "modern" variety) is NOT the same thing as "devil-worship." Satanists generally don't even believe in the Devil or in God -- at least not as they are described in the Bible. For most Satanists, "Satan" is a kind of personification of man's carnal nature. In fact, Satanism can be described as a kind of formalized rebellion against the restrictions on behavior and thought imposed by Christianity and other religions. It purports to use the trappings of religion as a means to direct and focus one's thoughts and willpower. Above all, Satanism is the exaltation and improvement of the self.

I don't consider myself a Satanist, but I've read the Satanic Bible and related material, so I realize that a lot of my personal philosophy is very compatible with Satanism. For example, I do not believe in turning the other cheek when someone deliberately attempts to harm me. (On the other hand, I am a very forgiving person and will forgive pretty much any wrong done to me IF the perpetrator sincerely apologizes.) I also don't believe in allowing other people (or their "inspired books") to tell me what's right or wrong; those are things I allow my own conscience and reason to decide. Of course everyone is influenced by the ideas of others (and everyone should be to some extent), but in the end, everyone should think for himself to the extent that he's able.

Incidentally, there is such a thing as "theistic Satanism," though it's probably very rare. Here's a website devoted to it for those who are curious:
