recently saw the movie Good bye Lenin.
Great movie with a great inovative concept:

"October 1989 was a bad time to fall into a coma if you lived in East Germany -- and this is precisely what happens to Alex's proudly socialist mother. Alex has a big problem on his hands when she suddenly awakens eight months later. Her heart is so weak that any shock might kill her. And what could be more shocking than the fall of the Berlin Wall and the triumph of capitalism in her beloved East Germany? To save his mother, Alex transforms the family apartment into an island of the past, a kind of socialist-era museum where his mother is lovingly duped into believing that nothing has changed. What begins as a little white lie turns into a major scam as Alex's sister and selected neighbors are recruited to maintain the elaborate ruse -- and keep her believing that Lenin really did win after all! "

The music is by Yann Tiersen, great for easy listening.

I have been meaning to see that, thanks for calling my attention to it again. It was playing at a small theatre here awhile ago, I doubt it still is :( It's not on video already is it? Was it playing at major theatres where you are?

Achtung! It's German so it has to be good.

You would be surprised if you knew how many former GDR residents still live in the past mentally. And I cannot really blame them. The annexation should have been the other way around - then we'd easily have gotten rid of all this "western" materialist, hedonist, nihilist nonsense.

Is this film anti-East Germany, or pro-East Germany?

Neither, really. But it's sympathetic towards the East, in a nostalgic sort of way. Also known as Ostalgia (ostalgia, ironically, is also a medical term meaning pain in the bones) a play on words Ost (east) and nostalgia.

I thought you didn't go for those kind of things, being a good Catholic boy and all. ;)

Heck, what did I write? It seems I am not sufficiently perverted for conversations with swarthy Turkoslavs. ;)

No it only played at small theatres here as well. In the Netherlands it's currently available in video/dvd rental stores. I don't know if it's for sale yet, but I wouldn't be surprised.

It's a great movie and a must see, if it's not available where you live atm then there are probably ways to download it using bittorent, soulseek, emule, kazaa, winmx or direct connect.
