Up to 200 far-Right Jewish extremists are prepared to kill Israel's prime minister Ariel Sharon, the director of the country's Shin Bet internal security service said yesterday.
Avi Dichter said he had a list of between 150 and 200 potential assassins who were "actively awaiting" the death of Mr Sharon because of his plans to dismantle Jewish settlements (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;sessionid=0R3CVIZJG1RWFQFIQMGSNAGAVCBQWJVC?xml=/news/2004/06/04/wmid04.xml).
Speaking at a hearing of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee in Israel's parliament, Mr Dichter said most of those on the list lived in West Bank and Gaza Strip settlements that were due to be dismantled by the end of 2005.
After the meeting, Ehud Yatom, a committee member, told Army Radio he wondered why those on the list were not being detained and interrogated. "I don't see any difference between Jewish terrorism and Palestinian terrorism," he said.
