Dutch move for Van Basten
Ajax have confirmed they have been formally approached by the Dutch football association (KNVB) about Marco van Basten becoming national coach.
The Ajax reserve coach is wanted by the KNVB to fill the vacancy left by Dick Advocaat's departure.
And the club admitted KNVB boss Henk Kesler has made a direct enquiry.
Ajax director Arie van Eijden said: "Ajax is proud that members of the technical staff of Ajax are being considered to lead the Dutch side."
The KNVB also wants Ajax's John van't Schip to become assistant to Van Basten.
"With a friendly against Sweden on 18 August, a decision needs to be taken soon," said a KNVB spokesman.
Van Basten, 39, played for Ajax and AC Milan and won the 1988 European Championship with Holland before an ankle injury forced him to retire in 1995.
Van't Schip played for Ajax, Genoa and Holland as a midfielder.

Advocaat resigned earlier this month after intense public and media criticism of the team's performances despite guiding Holland to the Euro 2004 semi-finals.
According to Dutch media reports, influential former Holland star Johan Cruyff proposed Van Basten and Van't Schip at a meeting with the KNVB on Monday.
And Van Basten said on Tuesday he would not turn down an offer to become the new Dutch coach. Van Basten would be the second national coach from the 1988 team after Frank Rijkaard, who was in charge of the Dutch squad between 1998 and 2000.
