I am currently reading Stalin: Breaker of Nations by Robert Conquest. Might anyone have a suggestion for a better, and more authoritative biography of Uncle Joe?

Conquest! Hah! Most Soviet historians think him a crackpot.

I would suggest reading Next to Stalin by a bodyguard to Stalin, Secret Documents published by Northstar Compass, Another View of Stalin by Ludo Martens, Joseph Stalin: A Short Biography.
