I need an interior designer's help or someone with some knowledge of interior design and/or period furniture.

Anyone? Anyone? I'm desperate.

There's a box of crackers under that sofa.

Yeah, but it matches the sofa beautifully. :p

I would like to supply me with some more info concerning your preferable style.
1.Is this picture expressing your own acceptable interior style or simply you like to keep this interior style for private reasons?
2.What are the dimensions of the room containing this sofa?
3.Which is your preferable colours and materials?
Kindest Regards!

That sofa would look better reupholstered in leopard print velvet with dark purple trim and the feet should be replaced with black claw feet. Plain black coffee table with glass top, plain black end tables. I'm also thinking: Purple shag carpeting. Lava lamps and/or blacklight. A black velvet Elvis painting.

Alternately, you could do use kimono silk on the sofa. Remove the carpeting and replace with tatami mat flooring. Have a Bonzai tree on simple black cherry wood (Prunus serotina) end table. A matching tea table with a Zen garden on top of it (with sand, stones, little rakes and stuff to help your guests relax). A few small, simple items of Buddhist and Shinto art on the walls.

You have a box of Czechs under your sofa?!
I'm apalled with your anti-Slavic behaviour :p

They come a dime a dozen. ;)

But a box of balances is way more expensive. ;)

I'd say either a cream or coffee colored table would match your couch.

There is a story behind this seemingly innocuous sofa. That's why this is so important to me. Let me explain:

Nearly 7 years ago, when I bought my first home, I was out running around one afternoon (it was a Sunday, the Lord's day) when I decided to stop at this second-hand store named Gone Junkin' in the really white trashy part of town (where I now live). Lo and behold and blow me away, this darling little sofa was sitting right there in the front room. I knew at that point that I wanted it, but I decided to look around the place for a bit before going back to it (it was during this phase of the operation that I came across this great set of 8 porcelain demitasse cups with an all-over 24k gold fleur-de-lis pattern which I subsequently bought for only $15).

Whilst I was perusing the rest of the place and instructing the unshaven, sweaty guy at the cash register to wrap up my demitasse cups very carefully, another women, at least 10 years my senior and 30 pounds heavier, strolled in like she owned the damn place and immediately gravitated towards my sofa. I could see in her deportment the savvy swagger of an educated second-hand furniture shopper.

I knew I had to act fast. I quietly asked the sweaty guy how much he wanted for the sofa. He said, "Seventy-five." "Seventy-five... dollars?" I asked. Had I found this sofa at some pretentious shop on Melrose, it would have been nearest a $1,000.- so I was prepared for him to say $200, $300, or $400. I knew that this guy had no idea that he had such a treasure, but I had no idea he was that ignorant! Of course, I uttered a small scream of "Sold!" and looked behind me to see what that semi-elderly, heavy-set shrew was doing. She was listening and heard me. I knew she was. I was so satisfied with myself.

I reached into my purse to get the money to pay for the sofa and the demitasse cups, but I didn't have enough cash on me! I hopelessly asked if he took personal checks or credit and he didn't. That's when she & I exchanged evil glances and I knew that she was going to try to get this sofa for her own selfish self. I saw a glimmer of hope in her dark, beady, satanic eyes.

I asked the man to hold the sofa and cups for me for only 30 minutes while I ran to the nearest ATM and he agreed so I was off, but fully present in my mind was that wretched woman. I knew she's be waiting for me to return. And she was.

When I returned, triumphant, with cash in hand, there the b!tch was, parking her fat ass on my sofa! She looked oh so comfortable and I could see what she was thinking, how great this would look in her house and how she'd tell all her cronies about her coup. I was livid. Just livid. I've never witnessed such insolence in my life. I handed the sweaty man the $90 and asked her kindly, but not too kindly, to remove herself from my new sofa. If looks could kill. ;)

The whole room is beige. Any contrasting earth tone will match.

If it were me, I'd ditch the sofa, the lamp, and the pastel-toned pictures, rip up the carpet and put down hardwood, replace the vertical blinds with drapes, and paint the walls a green or mustard-tinted khaki. Then buy a contrasting furniture suite in a dark, rich color like oxblood or a mahogany brown. Faux hide patterns of tiger or leopard would look good too.

Short of that, just get some tables with the same tone or finish as the sofa legs.

More ideas:

Get a bigger picture for that wall with the light switch. Get three small coats of arms or oval antique portraits and arrange them in a vertical line on the other wall. Some of the pictures should have a small splash of red in them somewhere. Take down the vertical blinds, go to Pier 1, and get a set of heavy curtain rods and drapes with faux animal hide or a paisley pattern. Get matching pillows and arrange them on the sofa.

I live in a rented apartment now. I can't paint or tear down anything. And honestly, I'm tired of colors. I know that sounds odd, but in my old home I had a very rich palette of strong reds, greens, and blues and now I'm just done with it. I had Pergo in my old house and custom drapes and everything else. I want easy now. Easy, simple, light, small, no worries. Little cleaning. Heavy fabrics and strong colors are stimulating and need a lot of care. I want to stick with a small scale in very neutral colors. Think urban Manhattan.

I don't like Pier 1. I think they are too theme-ish, pseudo chic and overpriced. That's fine for the average suburbanite housewife making her initial foray into interior design or the neophyte teenager-designer, but not for me.

BTW, those pictures are Degas. The most brilliant impressionist ever (and a notorious anti-semite). Degas stays.

The whole room is beige. Any contrasting earth tone will match.

I hacker her into pieces and put them in my freezer. She was getting too uppity and started to habitually talk back. ;)
