View Full Version : Invisible mode, why?

Ebusitanus

Why would members here willfully hide their presence on the board? So that no one sees how much time you spend here? So that you can take someone by surprise with an uexpected response? I mean, you need to disable your default visible condition in order to hide in the shadows...Why would you do it?

Care to share your reasons?

Ixabert

I do this because I believe in absolute anonymity, and, in this strange, unusual world, full of people who could be trying to find 'patterns' in my sleeping schedule, privacy.

I never said 'Big Brother', i.e. the government, was watching me. I said people could be trying to find patterns in my sleeping schedule, not necessarily the government.

"People"? And then "they" would do exactly what? Steal your car? If its not some refined agency then how do you think these "people" will be able to harm/disturb you?

It's always been a forum habit, because I don't like people going "LOOK, I KNOW YOU'RE ON, WHY DON'T YOU RESPOND TO MY POST RIGHT NOW!"

How do you expect me to have knowledge of their intentions and motivations?

My cups are ceramic, not plastic. Bacteria stick more easily to wooden and plastic cups than to glass and ceramic cups. I said my ideal cup would be one with a metal exterior, a ceramic interior, a plastic rum, and a rubber handle. This will not work for several reasons; therefore I would be content with one with a ceramic interior and a plastic exterior, but certainly not a plastic interior.

Thats silly Edana...being "ON" does not mean anything. I leave my computer unattended for hours sometimes when I need to step out. I could care less about people´s expectations to my answers. The best answers are anyhow those you make when the other party thinks you have conceded :D

No...really, thats your excuse? Does it happen to you often that you get harassed because of not answering right away? I have not seen it happen here so far...well besides the Spinoza-Fade debate about the Holocaust :D

It's quite simple.

People do it because vBulletin (and other forum software programs) gives them the option to do it.

Otherwise, who really cares?

But that doesn't explain why some choose the option and others don't.

Maybe they don't like others to see what they're doing, what thread they're viewing, they don't want to receive PMs from certain people or to get some messages on their yahoo and MSN saying "I know you're on the forum so don't ignore me".

The best way to avoid random comments like that is not invisible mode, but to not include 'female' as your gender. It is one thing that automatically gets attention on an internet forum, mostly because the majority of members are male :p But even if you don't include your gender, once a few people are aware of it the news spreads and suddenly you become interesting. "oh they are a girl?!?! do they have a pic?!?!" (or: "do they suck the blood of mortals?" in your case) Funny :p

Stormfront doesn't have male/female on the profiles. Females are so unusual for them on boards, it's like they were a rare stone or something

Allah says to hide your beauty. My Phora username is part of my beauty, and so I use the vBulletin virtual burqa option to conceal it. If my username is displayed it may lead to grave sins with other Phora members, may Allah protect me from it.

The user name "bayerisches maedchen" kinda gives it away though. And if she set gender to "male" that would evoke even more uwelcome connotations.

And of course she sucks blood. All females do, one way or the other. ;)

Someone shoulda told me about that earlier. I often leave my PC on and go out. I think it increases, but at least others are not able to see if you are here or not at the moment. I mean, it don't make much sense seeing the online graphic on, if you are not here.

Now, why Ayres? Do you really think people are waiting to see you online in order to harrass you? Its a joke.
When I need to comunicate with someone I will do so regardless if he/she is online or not. I might try to send a Yahoo chat buzz over if I see you online but I fully expect you not having the darn thing on or that you are away from your computer.

Now..invisibility on Yahoo might be a different issue since chatting does take active time from your Real life tasks...but forum time? pleeease...

Yet the best part as Mod is that I see you all on regardless if you want it to be known or not. Its just silly and sad.

LOL, not to harass me... but for instance when you are in a discussion the other person might be looking for your answer, and it's annoying to see someone online and that person doesn't answer. Well, but looking a bit deeper... only one or two people have complained about that... i'm beggining to wonder what's the point... :)

The best way to avoid random comments like that is not invisible mode, but to not include 'female' as your gender. It is one thing that automatically gets attention on an internet forum, mostly because the majority of members are malePerhaps on the forums you frequent - but for many internet forums that's not true anymore. Keep in mind that the demographics of one board are not necessarily representative of 'net boards in general. :)
But even if you don't include your gender, once a few people are aware of it the news spreads and suddenly you become interesting. "oh they are a girl?!?! do they have a pic?!?!" (or: "do they suck the blood of mortals?" in your case) Funny :p:p
