National League

Atlanta Braves' 4-2 win over Philadelphia Phillies gave them sole possession of first place in the NL East for the first time this season.

Mike Hampton (5-8) pitched seven strong innings and John Smoltz closed out for Braves' 16th win in 20 games.

Adam LaRoche, Andruw Jones, Charles Thomas and Chipper Jones drove in the runs that enabled Smoltz to chalk up his 18th save in 20 attempts.

Montreal Expos halted Pittsburgh Pirates' 10-game home winning streak, their longest since 1978, on the back of a four-run seventh inning, set up by Terrmel Sledge's groundball past first base which drove in two runners.

Defending world champions Florida Marlins had pinch-hitter Lenny Harris to thank for a go-ahead single in the ninth inning to squeeze them home 6-5 at the New York Mets.

Scott Rolen's tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning off Carlos Zambrano propelled St Louis Cardinals to their 12th win in 14 games in a spiky encounter at Chicago Cubs.

Zambrano (9-5) was ejected in the eighth inning after hitting Jim Edmonds for the second time with a pitch, and as both benches had been warned, Cubs manager Dusty Baker was also thrown out.

American League

Aubrey Huff and Robert Fick both drove in two runs as Tampa Bay Devil Rays clung on for a 9-7 win over the New York Yankees.

The Devil Rays jumped out into a five-run lead in the first, only for the Yankees to square things by the fifth inning.

Geoff Blum's RBI single and Fick's two-run double gave the Devil Rays' bullpen a three-run lead for Lance Carter (3-2) to protect. Minnesota's Terry Mullholland became only the third pitcher to beat all 30 teams as the Twins posted a 3-1 win at the Detroit Tigers. Mullholland joined New York Mets' Al Leiter and Yankees' Kevin Brown on the list, thanks to pinch-hitter Jose Offerman's two-run single in the seventh inning.

Well I knew the Braves would pull out of the slump and make it to first place. They always do. Now only if they can win the playoffs and make it to the series like they did so many times in the 90's.
