What does this wierd word mean?

It is shorthand for "web log." Basically, a diary posted on an Internet site.

The term was popularized by computer nerds and has unfortunately been with us ever since. It is a stupid, inartful word, I agree.

I'm reminded of another poorly chosen term. You may or may not know that the golf clubs known as "woods," which used to be made of persimmon wood, are now made of steel or titanium. I recall watching a golf tournament on TV where the broadcasters decided to be all progressive and use the term "metal," as in a "3 metal," or a "5 metal." Thankfully, it didn't stick and also, "irons" are still called irons despite the fact that they are made of steel.
